Character Name: Sakata "Ginpachi" Gintoki
Character Series: Gintama
Character Age: 22
Character Grade: Teacher of Contemporary Philosophy
General AU background:
Gintoki “Ginpachi” Sakata, 22, is an alumnus of EverNoir, and quite a memorable one at that too, having almost flunked his senior year because of his record 30-day absence. Gintoki’s laziness was nothing less than a legacy. He graduated by the skin of his teeth and the fists of the determined faculty, some of who immediately retired after this onerous effort.
After high school, Gintoki opted not to go to college and dabbled in several jobs for a year, trying to find some meaning in life and a job with decent wages, until Otae (literally) beat some sense into him and sent him straight to a local community college as a means of reform. Surprisingly, Gintoki did exceptionally well, but he still didn’t feel that he had found something worth living for.
When he heard there were teacher positions available at his old high school, his immediate reaction was: “Kids? I hate kids.” However, jobs were sparse, and he needed to pay rent, so he applied. The school was less than thrilled to have the legendary delinquent under their wings once more, but they were in dire need of new teachers. Desperation brought both sides to a compromise. EverNoir dministrators found themselves unexpectedly pleased with Gintoki’s performance, as he was naturally good at his subject and the students found him to be a very candid and comfortable mentor. The teachers who knew him before, however, still treat him like a student.
Gintoki insisted that he be called “Mr. Ginpachi” as a teacher. Perhaps he wanted to shed his old image as a good-for-nothing brainless git, and be respected as a real teacher. Despite his vociferous complaints about ungrateful brats and dismal wages, he does really love his job.
But even as a teacher, he still procrastinates on grading work, eats during class, is easily bribed into changing grades with sugary treats (despite his diabetes), rants about soap operas during lessons, and ditches class without notice. His teaching style is also peculiar. There is hardly any homework, but a lot of lectures. Tests are completely based on essays, and there is no wrong or right answer. It’s no wonder the kids love him.
